GNSS: from Navigation to Multiple Function Systems

Introduction: Prof. Chen Wu work at Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was the president of Global Chinese GPS Association. He achieved his bachelor degree from Department of physics in university of science and Technology of China in 1982, and achieved his doctor degree from Department of surveying in Newcastle University in UK in 1992. He worked in Surveying Engineering and Spatial Geodesy Institute in the University of Nottingham in 2000. His research interesting include GNSS smart transportation, GNSS kinematic location, GNSS system integration, GNSS performance assessment, wireless sensor-network location, applications of airborne Lidar, virtual reality and augmentation, and so on. He has more than 200 publications in recent years.

Presentation Introduction: GNSS technology has been widely used for positioning, navigation, and timing, from ground to space. The positioning accuracy has been increased from 100 m to millimetre level. Various augmentations systems have also been developed to enhance the capability of GNSS for navigation, particularly integrity. On the other hand, many different applications using GNSS signals have been developed. This presentation will review the development of GNSS technologies and particular, stress on non-positioning related applications, such as GNSS atmosphere remote sensing, GNSS-SAR, and etc.. Based on the discussion, multiple function GNSS systems will proposed for the next generation of GNSS to fulfil much wider applications of satellite technologies.
